Rebs,
Yes, the transformer is exactly that.
It is a device that is used to "Transform" 120 volt ac voltage to either
12 or 24 volt AC voltage.

i.e. not change it to dc voltage, but just change the voltage level from the high 120 volts to the lower 12 or 24 volts.
